The biggest draw this year is the ₹1 crore overall prize pool, which the Ladakh Administration announced while launching the official marathon jersey in August. The administration said the enhanced prize pool contributed to unprecedented interest, with registrations reaching nearly 10,000 runners, compared with 6,521 participants the previous year.Prize money is offered across the five timed races, for both men and women, covering the overall top three and top three veterans. The 5-km Run for Fun is not a timed race.Prize entitlements are based on chip time, with winners’ names announced provisionally on race day before final verification. The organisers state that prize money will be transferred to winners’ bank accounts within 30 to 60 working days after the event, following ratification of the results. The most important rule: acclimatise before running
A runner in Ladakh
Leh is located at high altitude, and the organisers strongly emphasise acclimatisation before race day.For the Silk Route Ultra and Khardung La Challenge, participants are advised to arrive in Leh at least 15 days before the race.Marathon and Half Marathon participants are advised to arrive at least 10 days in advance,Those taking part in the 11.2-km and 5-km races are advised to arrive at least seven days before their event.A marathon that is also a high-altitude travel experienceThe Ladakh Marathon is unlike a conventional city race. Participants run through an extraordinary Himalayan landscape, while the altitude itself becomes part of the challenge. With six race formats, international recognition and a ₹1 crore prize pool, the 2026 edition has turned Leh into a destination for both serious endurance athletes and running enthusiasts. For those who missed the 2026 registration window, the best approach is to watch the official Ladakh Marathon website for the next edition, study its qualifying requirements and plan the trip around the organisers’ acclimatisation recommendations.
