OpenAI’s rogue AI agent reinforced a cybersecurity threat experts have long anticipated — and Jim Cramer said there’s one stock built for exactly this moment: CrowdStrike . “CrowdStrike will be the stock you should buy this morning,” Jim said during Wednesday’s Morning Meeting . ” While acknowledging the stock has had a big move in 2026, he said, “I think it’s a must-buy.” OpenAI disclosed late Tuesday that one of its advanced AI agents escaped a controlled testing environment during a cybersecurity evaluation, gained internet access, and ultimately compromised the infrastructure of AI startup Hugging Face, before the activity was detected and contained. The ChatGPT maker called it an “unprecedented cyber incident” and said it is strengthening safeguards around its most advanced models. Jim called the OpenAI incident a “watershed moment,” arguing it marks the arrival of a new era in cybersecurity as AI agents proliferate. Agentic systems represent the latest phase of the generative AI boom kicked off by the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Unlike a traditional chatbot that answers a query with written text, these more advanced systems are designed to execute tasks with little to no human intervention. “People cannot just dismiss this as another one of these hacks. This is a machine hacking another machine, and it did it on its own,” Jim said. Nevertheless, shares of CrowdStrike and fellow Club cyber name Palo Alto Networks fell nearly 2% Wednesday, coinciding with a broader pullback in enterprise software stocks in the session. The companies are two of the biggest members in the popular iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF , known as the IGV. With the IGV off about 2.5% Wednesday, some of the selling in CrowdStrike and Palo Alto could be chalked up to that broader move. We’ve lamented these ETF dynamics before, because we believe cybersecurity is on much stronger ground in the AI era than fellow IGV members selling applications for customer service, HR and other back-office functions. The OpenAI breach reinforces our belief that cybersecurity stocks will be winners in the AI era, not losers as their stock sell-offs during the “SaaSpocalypse” in early 2026 suggested. The market ultimately came around to that view following the emergence of Anthropic’s Mythos model in April, resulting in a remarkable multi-month rally that sent CrowdStrike and Palo Alto back to fresh all-time highs. Even before Mythos arrived on the scene, cybersecurity experts, including CrowdStrike co-founder and CEO George Kurtz, have warned that AI would eventually transform their industry, both by giving attackers more sophisticated tools and by requiring smarter AI-powered defenses to stop them. “The defenses, the things that we did before in the past, are being thrown out the window,” said David Kennedy, CEO of cyber consultancy TrustedSec , on CNBC. “We’re having to revisualize how we do cybersecurity across the board because we can no longer rely on traditional manual defenses or things that we’ve done in the past.” Jim said Tuesday’s events are exactly what CrowdStrike has been preparing for. “The only one that I know that has a good product to stop this is CrowdStrike,” Jim said. CrowdStrike’s Falcon AI platform already uses artificial intelligence to detect and respond to cyber threats. The company has expanded those capabilities with AI tools designed to identify and stop increasingly autonomous attacks before they spread. In June, CrowdStrike announced a new capability to monitor the actions of AI agents in real-time. And on Wednesday, CrowdStrike also announced a partnership with chipmaker Cerebras that it says will improve its AI security defenses by accessing faster compute. CrowdStrike will run its Falcon models on Cerebras’ unique AI chips, built specifically for speedy day-to-day model usage. Meanwhile, Cerebras will deploy the Falcon platform to protect its own company systems. “Fast, secure AI drives rapid adoption,” CrowdStrike’s chief business officer, Daniel Bernard, said in a press release.
