An Amazon cargo plane crashed just outside Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon.
Details of the crash were not immediately available, but video showed plumes of smoke billowing from the site. It appears that the aircraft crashed onto a road outside the airport.
A Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft overran the runway around 2 p.m. ET while landing in Miami, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The FAA identified the aircraft as a 21 Air flight.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel clarified that it was an Amazon flight operated by 21 Air. The company is working to support everyone affected, Nantel added.
“This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering details. We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,” Nantel said. “Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved.”
All runways and taxiways at the Miami airport were closed due to a ground stop following the incident, the airport spokesperson said in a statement.
More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene, and firefighters are working to extinguish a fire that broke out as a result of the crash, the agency said in a statement. There are “multiple patients” involved in the incident, it added.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it is gathering information about the incident.
An NBC News crew arrived at the scene Sunday afternoon to a long line of police and emergency responders lining the road around the crash. No smoke plumes were visible by the time the crew arrived.
Members of the media were restricted from a walking path that would provide a view of the plane.
