‘I’m REALLY worried about my…’: Woman seeks financial advice after discovering parents have no retirement savings after spending Rs 17 lakh on her wedding

'I'm REALLY worried about my...': Woman seeks financial advice after discovering parents have no retirement savings after spending Rs 17 lakh on her wedding

A wedding is often remembered as a milestone that brings families together. But for one 26-year-old woman, the celebrations also brought an unexpected financial reality into focus. She recently discovered that her parents, now in their early 60s, have very little money saved for retirement after spending a large part of their savings on her wedding. The woman turned to Reddit to seek advice on how she could help them prepare for the years ahead. Although her parents own a house and gold reportedly worth around Rs 30 lakh, she is concerned about how they would manage medical expenses and everyday needs if their financial situation changes. Her worry is also shaped by her own circumstances. She has just started her first job, earning Rs 20,000 a month, and feels she may not be in a position to provide substantial financial support if an emergency arises.

A wedding brings an unexpected financial reality

Sharing her concerns on the subreddit r/IndianPersonalFinance, the woman explained that she is an only child who grew up in a lower-middle-class household. Her father had gradually built a home for the family after purchasing a plot of land in a tier-3 city. The two-storey house has four bedrooms and is where her parents currently live. For years, she believed her parents were managing their finances reasonably well. However, she said she became aware of their limited savings only around the time of her wedding. According to her post, her father had lent Rs 10 lakh to her uncle, who was going through a financial crisis. He also spent most of his remaining savings on her wedding, which cost approximately Rs 17 lakh. The woman said her father had never openly discussed his financial situation with either her or her mother. As a result, she had little idea about the family’s savings, investments or financial commitments before the wedding. She now finds herself trying to understand how her parents will manage their retirement years, especially since their financial position is not as secure as she had assumed.

Her parents own a house and gold, but savings remain limited

The woman shared that her father is 63 and reportedly earns between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 a month. However, she admitted that she does not know his exact income because he has not shared complete details about his finances. Her parents have their own house and gold worth an estimated Rs 30 lakh, but their liquid savings are reportedly very low. This has left her concerned about expenses that could arise with age, particularly healthcare costs. She has already purchased health insurance worth Rs 10 lakh for her parents. While this is one step towards preparing for medical needs, she remains anxious about whether it will be enough to manage unexpected situations. The woman also explained that she is only in her second month at her first job. With a monthly salary of Rs 20,000, she does not feel financially equipped to take on her parents’ expenses. Although her husband earns around Rs 2 lakh a month and the couple is doing reasonably well, she said she has not discussed these worries with him because she feels uncomfortable sharing something so vulnerable. Her post reflected the pressure of wanting to support her parents while still trying to establish financial stability in her own life.

Reddit users suggest savings plans and ways to use existing assets

The post prompted several Reddit users to share suggestions. Some recommended creating a separate savings arrangement for the parents, while others pointed towards financial products and the possibility of using the family’s existing assets to generate income. One commenter suggested setting up a systematic investment plan in a debt mutual fund and keeping the money separate rather than handing it directly to the parents. The user suggested that the savings could be used to support them if a financial need arose.Another commenter recommended exploring the Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme. The person suggested that the family could consider selling some of the gold and investing the proceeds to create a regular income stream. The commenter also mentioned an interest rate of 8.25 per cent and described the interest as tax-free. These were suggestions shared by Reddit users, not verified financial recommendations.Another response questioned whether the gold worth Rs 30 lakh could be put to better use instead of remaining unused. The commenter suggested selling it and starting a systematic withdrawal plan. However, not everyone focused on selling assets or choosing an investment product. Some users advised the woman to first understand her parents’ actual financial position before making any major decisions.

‘You do not have to solve everything alone’

One Reddit user offered a more gradual approach, suggesting that the woman begin by having a calm conversation with her parents about their income, monthly expenses, savings and outstanding loans. The commenter also pointed out that owning a house and having gold are meaningful assets, even if the family has limited retirement savings. Instead of blaming her parents for their financial decisions, the woman was encouraged to understand their situation and work towards a practical plan. The user also suggested that she build her own emergency fund and consider discussing the matter with her husband when she feels ready. The central message was that she should not assume she has to manage every financial responsibility on her own. The discussion highlights a concern that many families may face when retirement planning is delayed or financial decisions are not discussed openly. For the woman, the immediate challenge is not simply finding an investment option. It is understanding her parents’ complete financial picture, identifying their needs and figuring out what support she can realistically provide without putting her own financial future at risk.
