12 injured, including several children, in Tallahassee, Florida, shooting

Twelve people, including several minors, were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium, where homecoming celebrations included a football game Saturday.

The Tallahassee Police Department said in a statement that 11 of the 12 were shot and that three victims had serious injuries. The others, it said, had been stabilized.

Six of the injured are under 18 years old, the department said.

Tallahassee police said a fight may have preceded gunfire. No arrests have been reported.

“Early findings indicate a physical altercation occurred prior to the shooting,” the department said.

The violence unfolded about 8 p.m. at an intersection adjacent to Bragg Memorial Stadium, it said. Early in the evening, Florida A&M’s Rattlers hosted the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions for the historically Black university’s annual homecoming game.

After the shooting took place, the university issued a statement on X asking members of its campus community to stay away from the area.

It described the shooting as having taken place “near campus,” which it said was safe.

“Our hearts are with the victims and everyone affected by tonight’s incident on Perry Street,” the university said.

Florida State University, about a mile away from Florida A&M, issued an emergency alert about the violence and said it didn’t appear anyone from its school community was involved.

“As a precaution, students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area are advised to remain indoors this evening and stay alert,” it said.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell offered condolences to the victims and their families,

“It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured,” he said in a statement.

The investigation into the violence was ongoing, and police asked witnesses to come forward.
