One person has died and multiple others were injured after a shooting in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday that included two officers among the victims, officials said.
The Hennepin County Medical Center said it had seven patients, one of whom is deceased.
The city announced the shooting at around 5:10 p.m. local time on social media and said police were responding.
“The Minneapolis Police Department is on the scene of a shooting in the area of 15 E Grant St. involving multiple victims, including two police officers,” the city said in its announcement.
The Hennepin County Medical Center said it did not have conditions available for the injured patients.
Aerial video from NBC affiliate KARE of Minneapolis showed a large police presence, including what appeared to be armored vehicles and SWAT-style officers.
A witness told KARE that she was walking downstairs to the lobby of a building when she heard gunshots and saw “somebody that was down.”
She said she “just left the building immediately, because I knew what was happening, so I didn’t want to be involved in that.”
“I heard lots of more shots. Once I was finally outside of the building, I probably heard 25 to 30 shots — because there were multiple officers who had went in and entered,” the woman told a KARE reporter, who described it as an apartment building.
Video taken by a person on the ground showed police vehicles with sirens and lights on.
The city government told people to avoid a large area of the city that included Loring Park.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said he was aware of the incident and thanked police who were responding to the situation. He said his public safety team was also heading to the area.
“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz said on X. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in St. Paul said it was responding to the scene.
FBI Director Kash Patel also said that his agency was aware and that its personnel was responding. “We will offer any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities,” Patel said on X.
